  • This is for those coming across the pond for the first time. Most service jobs in the US don’t pay their employees anything close to a living wage, so not leaving a tip in most places would be extremely bad form. If the service is poor, or if its a non-service situation just chancing their arm, there is still no expectation to leave a tip however.

    The going rate is generally 15% - 20% of the pre-tax total, but 20% is what most servers will be expecting. Fortunately, no mental math should be necessary as the percentages will be written on your receipt.

  • Its common practice in bars in the States to open a bar tab when you first order your drinks. Some bars might take your card behind the bar and you’ll have to remember to get it back at the end of the night. You can still order as you go though if you want.

    Don’t be surprised if you get hit with a couple of hefty charges at the end of your trip! It can sometimes take a few days for your tab to go through.
